NOGALES, Ariz. - The community of Nogales, Sonora is inviting tourists to experience their community in the coming months.
Manuel Hopkins is the director of economic development in Nogales, Sonora, in Mexico. He said tourism used to be the second largest economic driver in the community of 350,000 but that changed. Hopkins said Nogales' new mayor Ramon Guzman's philosophy is, "Nogales es tu casa," which means Nogales is your home.
According to Hopkins, one of the ways the new administration hopes to increase tourism is to pledge public safety by inviting authorities to attend scheduled events, "one of the ideas is that we really want to expand the activities in Nogales, Mexico so we're offering more things to do in Nogales."
Among them is the Winter Festival during the weekend of November 16, 17, and 18. Alvaro Heredia is the tourism director and said, "we're going to have a lot of activities like cultural activities. We're going to have music. Painting exhibition, picture exhibition, and people working on their art."
American tourists like Cheryl and Mel Schwery recommend traveling to Nogales. "I would just stay within a certain boundary though and you know the incorporated, the area that has more population and during the day, "said Cheryl. And Mel said, "I always feel safe. I don't care to roam way far down into Mexico but as long as you stay in the tourist shopping area I don't have a problem with it."
Elected officials from throughout Southern Arizona are expected to attend the Winter Festival. "People can come down, really have fun and experience a different way of living, a different way of looking at history," said Hopkins.
