TUCSON - A 25-year-old Nogales firefighter will be taken off life support after a truck ran him over last Thursday, according to a friend.
Kevin Chaffee, a Tucson Firefighter, has been Sterling Lytle's friend for about 5 years.
"It's painful and just horrific," Chaffee said. "I just can't imagine my life without him."
Lytle was riding in a friend's vehicle around 2 a.m. Thursday. An orange truck flashed its headlights and honked its horn behind them. They pulled over near Pima Street and Alvernon Way. Lytle got out and the truck ran him over, according to Tucson Police.
The latest vehicle description is an orange 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche, according to Chaffee. Previously, police thought it might have been a Silverado or Blazer. It should have visible front-end damage. The driver is described as a Hispanic male.
"It's killing us all," Chaffee said. "There's just so much unknown from our aspect, and he's out there somewhere."
Lylte started as a volunteer firefighter with the Helmet Peak Fire Department. Then he was hired as an EMT with the Nogales Fire Department. He also teaches EMT classes at Pima Community College.
Dozens of firefighters from several agencies visited Lytle at University of Arizona Medical Center Saturday.
"The fire department, it's not a community," Chaffee said. "It's much more than that. It's a family."
Friends will hold a vigil at Tucson Fire Central Downtown at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
