TUCSON - Sterling Lytle, a Nogales firefighter was laid to rest Monday in Tucson.
The 25-year-old was taken off of life support July 3. Authorities say Lytle was hit by a truck June 28th when he stopped to confront a driver who had been following him and a friend in Tucson.
More than a 1,000 people attended Lytle's memorial service and fire departments from all over Southern Arizona were on hand to bid farewell.
Lytle joined the Nogales Fire Department seven months ago, Captain Leo Lopez said that in a short amount of time Lytle made a big impact, "he touched our lives the moment we met him in a courteous and kind manner that he only knew how. He had a way of winning your heart over. He immediately became one of us at Nogales fire."
Lytle had a pilot's license and was an EMT instructor at Pima Community College, "he was my teacher and he taught me what I know. And he taught a lot of other people what they know and you know it's going to be a big loss because he was very, very knowledgeable and he spread that knowledge to a lot of people," said Alex Gonzalez, an EMT with Southwest Ambulance.
Casey Barcelo, Lytle's stepfather said the family made the difficult decision to remove Sterling from life support and donate his organs, "he's given part of himself so that others may live."
Authorities are still searching for the driver who hit Lytle and then drove away, he's described as a Hispanic man who was last seen driving an orange, 2003 to 2005 Chevrolet Silverado truck or an Avalanche with front end damage. A $26,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case, you can call 911 or 88-CRIME.
