Posted 3:57 PM 7/18/2013 : Tenants go weeks without air conditioning
TUCSON - Another Tucson apartment complex is without air conditioning in the middle of the dog days of summer.
In response to an air conditioning problem at Mountain Vista Apartments News 4 received information of another complex owned by the same company also facing the heat.
For months, people living at the Summit Ridge Apartments on Craycroft Road near Broadway say they've been without A/C and have been getting the run-around from management.
News 4 Tucson spoke to nearly a dozen residents who say the A/C hasn't been working for over a month. They declined to go on camera for fear of retaliation or possible eviction. So we went to the management's office looking for answers.
They told us it was their company's policy (Gaines Investment Trust ) not to comment and asked us politely to leave.
One resident agreed to talk to us, but only if we concealed his identity. He says when it's 100 degrees outside it's 90 degrees in his apartment.
"My wife suffers from heat exhaustion so I have to be very careful with her, the kids are trying to get to the pool to cool off," he said.
He describes their struggle as well as the other residents to keep cool during the hot days.
"A few people have gotten sick from it, so we're just trying to get through using wet towels things like that."
He says it takes six fans to keep his apartment somewhat cool. Another problem they have is when they cook, it causes the temperature to go up.
He says he's gone to the office at least four times to complain and he's given all sorts of excuses from they're ordering new parts, to getting new management.
"I'd just like to see the A/C get fixed. That's it, I mean we're paying all utilities included the office is nice and cool but everyone else is suffering."
News 4 contacted the City of Tucson, and they told us they've only received one complaint this month. There was a problem, but it's been resolved.
However many other residents tell us, they are afraid to contact the city to complain for fear of retaliation.
They say they can't move out because they can't afford it.
