TUCSON - One of the victims in the shooting on January 8, 2011, was a very special little girl,
Christina-Taylor Green. On the eve of what would have been her 11th birthday her family attended an event at Cross Middle School to announce a new project to benefit school children.
Christina was born on 9/11, a tragic day in U.S. history. But those who knew her say her short life was all about joy, a child wise beyond her years. Hoping to pass on that spirit to other children the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation is sponsoring a project to promote volunteerism.
The project is based on a film called "New York Says Thank You" chronicling the 9/11 tragedy and the charitable response from Americans. It spawned a national program for school children across the country called the 9/12 Generation Project. Each selected school is given a $99 Service Activation Kit containing the film on DVD and the projects core curriculum.
Christina's father, John Green, says it is a perfect fit for what his family is hoping to accomplish with the fund bearing his daughter's name.
"That is what our foundation is all about, helping others who are less fortunate, getting involved in the community any way we can", he said, "and that's how we got involved with the 9/12 Generation Project."
One of the first schools to benefit from the program is Cross Middle School. School principal, Shannon Chandler, says she believes the program will definitely make an impact,"Having the Christina-Taylor Green Foundation fund this throughout Arizona and the nation is an incredible tool to help us help our kids be better people."
The $52,000 donated from the memorial fund will help sponsor a program in every single middle school in the State of Arizona and the five boroughs of New York City. It will also fund a program for one middle school in every one of the other 48 states.
