Posted 10:50 PM 5/8/2012 : New hope for MAS supporters
TUCSON - There could be new hope for supporters of Mexican American Studies, the program eliminated in early 2011. The Department of Education is now investigating after a racial discrimination complaint was filed with the Office of Civil Rights and the Department of Justice is involved in another investigation with the TUSD board.
In a monthly TUSD board meeting, a supporter of Mexican American Studies spoke out. "The board was not even listening to the community. They were texting. How interesting the board is disengaged when the Department of Justice is coming to do an investigation on civil rights violations of the whole board," said David Morales, a MAS supporter.
We're told the investigations by the DOE and the DOJ could take as little as 30 days or as long as 5 years.
