TUCSON - The Mint Cocktails bar on Grant Road was recently purchased by new owners. The business partners also happen to operate Wild Boys, a group of men who provide entertainment to women.
"I think as far as calling us strippers, I'd rather be an entertainer. It's not about going down and showing skin. It's about putting on a show that's professional done and tasteful, that women enjoy," explained Chris Smith, one of the owners.
Owners Chris Smith and Skyy Garcia say they want to keep the regulars who frequent the bar during the day but they also want to offer karaoke, comedians, live bands and the Wild Boys entertainment a couple nights each week. Ronni Kotwica, president of the Palo Verde Neighborhood Association said when she and her fellow neighbors first met with Garcia and Smith, the two never mentioned the Wild Boys, "it just brings in a bad element and we want to cut that off before it begins."
Kotwica said the association suggested installing a sound wall to keep noise out of the neighborhood and increasing security on nights that featured Wild Boys entertainment, "when you have a lot of single gals there, what that brings are guys looking for whatever they can get."
Garcia disagrees, "the Palo Verde Neighborhood Association talking about the kind of clientele that we're going to be bringing in, to me, that's a slap to the women of Tucson."
Smith said in the Wild Boys 30 year history the group has never had any problems or calls to 911. Garcia said the two own the dirt and building and intend to be good neighbors while investing in their new business venture, "Nobody. No bar owner wants anybody to get out of hand. We want ladies to be ladies and gentlemen to be gentlemen."
The Wild Boys are expected to begin performing at The Mint sometime in the next six months. Kotwica said the association is hoping Garcia and Smith will offer a walk through of the bar before to see the improvements before the new entertainment is offered.
