NACO, Ariz. - A new Border Patrol station was officially dedicated to the memory of slain Border Agent Brian Terry in Naco, Ariz.
Terry was killed in a firefight with Mexican bandits south of Tucson nearly two years ago.
The dedication marked the beginning of a vast improvement for the border agents who will work there. Stretching over more than 40 acres, the station is state-of-the-art and a far cry from the small station that agents used up until now.
Boasting enough resources to accomodate more than 450 agents, the facility will also be able to house mission support personnel.
On top of upgraded technology, the new station has on-site automotive maintenance as well as a 14-lane firing range that can mimmick nightime conditions. It's also very "green", using reclaimed water and powered in part by more than 1,300 solar panels on the roof.
"We're really stepping up the game in environmental consciousnes here," said Border Agent Kelly Vedic.
As for members of Brian Terry's family, the dedication was bittersweet. Robert Heyer, Brian's cousin, said the family is thrilled to have the station named after Brian.
"We hope that every youn agent that comes to be assigned to the Border Patrol Station here...The Brian A. Terry Border Patrol Station...will come to know Brian Terry," Heyer said at the dedication.
Heyer also says the family hopes that working agents will embody the "type of man that he was...and strive to be the agent that he became."
