Posted 4:17 PM 2/1/2013 : Neighbors react to 10-year-old driver
SIERRA VISTA - A car crashes right through the front of a Sierra Vista Circle K convenience store.
The person behind the wheel was a 10-year-old girl.
It happened on Thursday afternoon at the Circle K on 95 Rainbow Way.
The 31-year-old woman in the passenger seat told police she allowed her daughter to drive, but she hit the gas pedal when she meant to brake.
No one was hurt, but police wrote mom a ticket.
The 10-year-old was driving from her neighborhood down the street, a straight shot to Circle K, but instead of stopping, she crashed into the store.
"It was just nuts," said neighbor Brett Pritchard.
Friday the Circle K was patched up, but the car was sitting in the Morales home still a wreck.
"They had the fire department over there busting all the glass out and then I see them dropping off their car over here and I was like ‘oh crap,'" said Pritchard. "It was definitely surprising for sure."
Police said the 10-year-old's mother Linda Morales was in the passenger seat.
She was cited and released at the scene for allowing an unauthorized minor to drive.
"There's a reason why there's an age limit in being able to drive a vehicle and a ten year old just doesn't have the mental capability or physical capability to control a vehicle," said Corporal Scott Borgstadt with Sierra Vista Police.
Borgstadt said in his career with Sierra Vista PD, he's never seen anything quite like this.
"In 11 years, that's the first time I've heard of a child being the person driving the vehicle," said Borgstadt.
Pritchard said the girl often rides bikes with his nine-year-old son.
"They always ride with their kids around the block. They're not irresponsible parents or nothing," said Pritchard.
He said he can't imagine how they decided to let her behind the wheel.
"He'd never let me. Only when I'm 16," said Pritchard's son.
Pritchard said his kids always ask, but he never lets them drive.
"There's no way," said Pritchard.
