Posted 4:47 PM 6/27/2012 : Mexico to hold Presidential election Sunday
Mexicans will head to the polls Sunday to elect the country's new president.
An estimated 80 million people are eligible to vote in the election. Three candidates are leading the polls, among them Enrique Pena Nieto who represents the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) and Josefina Vazquez Mota represents the National Action Party (PAN).
Polls show Pena Nieto has holding the lead. The PRI party ruled Mexico for decades before the PAN party took over in 2000.
Unemployment rates are at a low and the auto industry is growing in Mexico. J. Felipe Garcia from the Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitor's Bureau said this election is one to watch because it could have major implications for the United States, "that next president if he's able to make some structural changes that will bring even more investment in Mexico will mean more jobs more money in Mexico that will in turn into more of those people coming here to Southern Arizona to go shopping, entertaining here in our community."
Campaigning for Mexico's next president officially ended Wednesday. Polls open on Sunday and the results are expected to be verified within the week.
