TUCSON - This weekend, Southern Arizonans will march for mental health - the march will support free mental health programs, and help eliminate the stigma and stereotypes that surround mental health disorders.

Today on News 4 at 4, Eric Harris from the National Allience on mental Illness, Southeastern Arizona, stopped by to talk about the event.

Below is a news release with the details:

On May 5 Southeastern Arizonans will March for Mental Health a 5k route beginning at Apache Middle School. The march will support free mental health programs, and to eliminate the stigma and stereotypes that surround mental health disorders.

This event is organized by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Southeastern Arizona Chapter or NAMI SEAZ. NAMI SEAZ provides support groups, mental health training, advocacy, information and referral services, and a self-help library. People often come to NAMI to seek more information about a diagnosis of depression, PTSD, anxiety, or how to help a family member who has ADHD or Alzheimer's. All services are confidential and free of charge to residents of Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, and Santa Cruz counties. Proceeds from the march stay in Southeastern Arizona.

Mental health is a vital part of overall health. When you march to promote mental health it gives our community a reason to re-evaluate prejudices about mental illness. Mental illness touches people from all walks of life. Mental illness impacts our relationships, families, businesses, and community. When citizens step up and identify this issue as being as important as all the other walks and fundraisers, the way mental illness is perceived changes.
