TUCSON - Is there a link between Body Dysmorphic Disorder and rhinoplasty?
A recent study done in Belgium found that 33 percent of patients wanting to have their nose fixed actually have the psychological condition known as BDD, or Body Dysmorphic disorder.
Here's the information from Dr. Maxwell's discussion:
A recent study by the University of Leuven in Belgium determined that 33% of patients seeking rhinoplasty surgery actually have a psychological condition called Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a type of chronic illness in which a person can not stop thinking about a perceived flaw in their appearance, a flaw that is either minor or imagined. Findings from this study support earlier studies, which also found that BDD is a relatively common disorder among individuals seeking aesthetic surgery, in particular, rhinoplasty patients.
Study's Key Findings:
• Out of 226 cosmetic rhinoplasty patients 33% had moderate to severe BDD
• BDD severely reduces the quality of life
• BDD causes significant appearance related disruption in daily living
• After the undergoing surgery most patients with BDD are still not satisfied with their appearance and may seek further procedures.
If someone dislikes their own nose should they worry?
No, while 33% of rhinoplasty patients may have BDD, most (67%) do not. Many people just want a subtle change to straighten their nose, remove a hump, or make their nose a little more proportionate to their face. These are very normal requests and don't signify a disorder.
