Posted 4:33 PM 7/11/2012 : Mail delivery continues despite fire
TUCSON - The US Postal Service made special deliveries to one north side neighborhood Wednesday after a mechanical failure caused one of their delivery trucks to go up in flames on Tuesday.
It happened in a neighborhood just south of River Road and east and west of Swan Roads at about 11 a.m.
David Birch, a US postal inspector said, "there was a mechanical engine problem. The driver pulled over and in a short time the vehicle was engulfed in flames, totally engulfed and virtually consumed totally." The driver was not injured in the incident.
He said a crew was going through each piece of salvageable mail Wednesday looking for any addresses so the affected pieces could still be delivered.
On Wednesday, the approximately 550 residences impacted by the fire, received a letter explaining what had happened and how they could file claims if mail was damaged.
Carol Smith lives across the street from where the fire happened,"we saw that it was a vehicle and at the time we didn't know that it was a mail vehicle cause it was totally engulfed in flames."
She received her mail as scheduled on Wednesday and received the letter explaining the incident. "I'm sure that things will get straightened out and the bills will eventually find their way to us," Smith said.
In the meantime, Birch assured customers business would continue, "this is a rare event that we do take the delivery of the mail very seriously and come rain or shine, snow, sleet, hail and sometimes even fire we're going to make sure the mail gets through."
