TUCSON-Crowds cheered on survivors and their families and friends as they crossed the finish line at the U of A Sunday during the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Thousands turned out to show their support in the fight against breast cancer.

For many there, it was much more than a race, but a way to honor a loved one who has suffered from the disease like Diana Camacho's mom.

"She was a survivor for seven years, and she got it back and eventually she passed away 6 years ago," said Camacho.

It's been hard on Camacho and her family.

"She was pretty much my everything," said Camacho.

But she finds comfort in racing for the cure.

"I just want them to find a cure for everybody that is facing the same problem," said Camacho.

According to breast the American Cancer Society, one in eight women and one in a thousand men will develop breast cancer.

That's what happened to Sonja Fritton's 35-year-old daughter.

"You think: 'my daughter has stage 3 breast cancer. She's going to die,'" said Fritton.

But Fritton is staying positive.

She walked in the Race for the Cure with friends who also had loved ones they honored.

"It gives you the strength to say that if she was tough enough to face all of this then I have to be tough too," said Camacho.
