TUCSON - State officials randomly picked winners for nearly 100 certificates to operate medical marijuana dispensaries in a draw in Phoenix today.

According to the Department of Health Services, 486 applications were submitted for the 126 available dispensary liscenses. Some districts did not have any applicants whereas some had multiple.

The draw was implemented to decide who would receive the certification in areas where at least two applied for dispensaries.

Ken Sobel was one of those people who applied for certification. He was joined by a crowd of other dispensary hopefuls at a Tucson restaurant today to watch the drawing.

"It's about time for our patients in Arizona who need the medicine that they have long awaited and had trouble getting access to even though the voters voted on this almost two years ago," said Sobel, who was picked for a couple certifications in the draw.

Sobel hopes to have his first dispensary open by September 1.

Chip Boyden was selected for a dispensary which he plans to open in Central Tucson. He expects there to be more procedures required by the state before any dispensaries open.

"This is something that needs to be done throughout ad it needs to be regulated," said Boyden. "We want regulation. We want to be treated like a medical condition."
