TUCSON- A local sculptor is on a mission to memorialize the youngest victim of the January 8 shooting, Christina-Taylor Green. But he can't do it without some help from the community.
Dan Hickman is a well-known sculptor in town, who works out of his home studio. He usually focuses on Western art. But ever since hearing about Nine-Year-Old Christina-Taylor Green's tragic death on January 8, 2011, he knew he wanted one of his pieces to pay tribute to her life.
"I like doing people because people have a story to tell," Hickman says.
He began sculpting a clay model of Christina-Taylor. It shows her laying down and reading a book, wearing her little league baseball uniform, with her #12 on the back. "She had her dream of being the first female major league player and life's all about dreams," Hickman says.
He's hoping to turn the model into a life size bronze statue that will sit in the butterfly garden at the county park named after Christina-Taylor. "We think it's a wonderful idea," Christina-Taylor's Father, John Green says.
For Green and his wife Roxanna, it's one more way to keep their daughter's memory alive at a place they often frequented as a family. "It will be a nice place for people to stop, reflect, sit down after they do their bike riding or hiking, Green says. "A peaceful spot and a good way to remember our daughter."
Christina-Taylor would have been 11 years old on September 11. Hickman hopes to have the statue ready by that birthday.
He says it's going to take about $25,000 to make the statue and he needs the community's help. If you would like to donate, head www.christina-taylorgreen.org.
