Posted 12:14 PM 9/14/2012 : Local cleaning companies help make life a bit easier for cancer patients
It is something most of us probably take for granted, the ability to keep our homes clean and free from clutter. However when you're battling cancer, even the smallest of tasks can become monumental.
That is why companies across the country, and right here in Tucson, are stepping up to help. They are partnering with a national organization called "Cleaning for a Reason," to provide free, professional house cleanings to women undergoing cancer treatment. It is a simple gesture that is making a world of difference.
"It's been rough," said Cristy Andrews, who has been battling cancer and complications from it for nearly four years. "It's been really, really rough these last couple of years."
Andrews says many times the chemo drugs designed to save her life, seem to be draining it out of her.
"I just wanted to sleep, I just didn't want to move, I didn't have the energy to move," she said.
That is where companies like The Maid Connection come in.
"You just see how much of a benefit or how helpful it is for us to come in and take care of them, take an added thing off their plate, and relieve some stress," said Michele Grosso, who owns The Maid Connection.
For Andrews it is a chance to breathe, and wipe another chore off that growing to-do list.
"It's nice that there's good people out there that are willing to reach out to people that are in distress right now," she said. "I'm going to beat it, working very hard to beat it."
"It's something that we naturally do," said Grosso. "We go out every day and clean houses, so why not go out and help the community as well."
So far The Maid Connection has helped 29 customers. Another local company, The Maids of Tucson, has helped 24.
