TUCSON - Susan G. Komen for the Cure has changed its mind. Too many people are upset that the charity pulled its grant funding for Planned Parenthood. It's money Planned Parenthood used for breast-cancer screenings.
Locally, Susan G. Komen of Southern Arizona has received thousands of calls, but they say besides the outcry, there isn't a local impact. Planned Parenthood in Tucson has never received grants from Komen and that's because they haven't applied for them.
Since the story broke, Planned Parenthood says they've received a number of donations, but they don't have a total number. Nationally, donations have tipped $3 million.
Both the local Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood hope all the attention will help the cause.
"When we need to learn from our mistakes I am grateful that type of learning can be made as transparent and open as Komen National is making it today," said Susan G. Komen of Southern Arizona Executive Director Jaimie Leopold.
"Even though initially the story was the funding guidelines were going to get changed, at the end of the day everybody stepped up together for what's true and important," said Planned Parenthood Associate Development Director Edna Meza Aguirre.
Leopold says they welcome the comments and concerns from the community and they will bring those concerns to the national level.
