Kids talk about bullying in schools

TUCSON-Students across Tucson Unified School District are embracing peace and non-violence by participating in the second annual Youth and Peace conference.

They learned about recognizing and reducing violence such as bullying.

Many of the students I talked to said they've been victims of bullying for a long time.

"It gets to the point where you just can't take it anymore," said Robert Young

Twelve-year-old Robert Young shed a tear as he tells his story.

"People try to get on my nerves because I'm shorter and they think they can overpower me," said Young. "Vulgar language and stuff like that."

He said they've even teamed up against him in a group.

"The kids who think they have power in their clique at school," said Young. "Sometimes I don't want to go to school, but I do anyway."

It's a common story for kids his age.

According to the National Education Association, one in three kids in grades 6 through 10 are bullied at school.

But workshops like Howard Glasser's at the Youth and Peace conference are trying to cut down on those statistics with the "Nurture Heart Approach" where kids are given attention for good behaviors rather than bad.

"Which is a way of activating and nurturing the greatness in kids that they already have," said Glasser.

Glasser believes this nurturing practice can breed well-behaved kids rather than bullies, but Young hopes kids that are already bullies can also learn to be nice.

"Especially at Middle School verbally because people want to get on your nerves because you're different," said Young.
