Posted 7:44 AM 7/23/2012 : Kids Care II helps low-income children get health insurance

TUCSON- Several thousand children from low-income homes can now receive health insurance through Kids Care II.

It's a continuation of the original Kids Care program that ran out of state funds a few years ago. Several private donors stepped forward to revamp the program. They put together the funds needed to receive the federal funds match.

Under the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) Kids Care II has new requirements to register your child. Households must earn less than %175 of the federal poverty level.

"Right now we have just under ten thousand children enrolled so there is still plenty of room throughout the state for kids to enroll in the program," said Cheryl O'Donnell with United Way.

Kids Care II offers coverage for $60. That fee covers as many children a family might have.

The program will only run until the end of 2013. Beginning in 2014 the Affordable Care Act is expected to be in full effect. At that point it will be up to the state to determine whether or not to except Medicaid expansion.

Staff from The United Way of Tucson will be available this Wednesday the 25th from 8:30am to 4:30pm to help you enroll. They will be at Picture Rocks Community Center, 5615 N Sanders Road. Enrollment can also be done online at www.healthearizona.org.
