Tucson - The rain the monsoon will soon bring will be most welcome. However, the high winds, rain and lightning can cause serious damage to your home.
"We heard a loud crash. It was like a gunshot and of course you all go outside to see what's going on and there was a fire on the palm trees," says Kimber DeLorenzo as she points to a neighbor's palm trees. "And what actually occurred was both of them were on fire."
Northwest Fire District responded to the call.
"This tree was struck causing debris dropping down around this house and onto the roof of this house," says Adam Goldberg with Northwest Fire. "You can see where a lot of the gutter and roofing material had to be replaced and taken off."
This is why it is so critical to keep a defensible space of 30 feet around your house and property clear of burnable materials.
Wind also causes big time damage. Every monsoon News 4 shows you the damage; carports torn apart, roofs blown off, power polls snapped and trees atop cars. Goldberg reminds you to secure items around your property that might become hazards in high winds.
"And we saw a fire recently where an umbrella from a gust of wind came up and caught into power lines. Those power lines were shorted, dropped down and caused damage to a mobile home."
Kimber gets the message. She keeps a defensible space around her property and, "I always make sure my trees are pruned up and that the wind go through them as much as possible."
