TUCSON - Today, jurors recommended the death penalty for Michael Carlson, who was convicted last month for kidnapping and murdering two neighbors in Marana in 2009.
He will be sentenced by a judge on October 29 at 10 a.m "on the kidnapping charges he was convicted of last month."
Carlson showed no emotion when the verdict was read. A member of his defense team told News 4 Tucson that's because Carlson believes the decision will be overturned on appeal. All death penalty cases get an automatic appeal.
Ed Palakovich was one of the jurors. He spoke exclusively to News 4 Tucson saying, "there was a lot of evidence that stacked up against him, that's why the decision was made to give him the death penalty. We know we made the right choice."
Diana Alliman is the mother of one of the victims. She says she knows the death penalty won't bring her son back, but at least she knows he won't be hurting anyone again."
Carlson admitted in a 2009 News 4 Tucson interview to killing between 10 and 12 people, including his two Marana neighbors, since 1967. This interview was a key piece of evidence in Carlson's murder trial.
Back in 2009, Carlson sat down with News 4 Tucson's Rebecca Taylor for an exclusive interview, in which he boldly admitted to killing not only Alliman and Lofton, but also his own sister, and between six and nine other people in so-called "hunts" for justice.
The most recent of all the murders were those of Kenneth Alliman and Rebecca Lofton, Carlson said. His motivation was justice for theft he claims they committed.
"And this is the only killing, pardon my language - that [expletive deleted]-ed my head up, and I still have problems with it today and I have no problems with the people I've killed in the past," Carlson said to Taylor during the 2009 interview.
