Posted 8:55 AM 7/3/2012 : Sonoran Soaker: Strong storms, flash flooding possible today

TUCSON - The most active days of the Monsoon are upon us.

Ample moisture teaming up with a low pressure trough triggers scattered thunderstorms today, according to News 4 Meteorologist Jeff Beamish. Thunderstorms should fire up late this morning, moving into Tucson proper after 2 PM and continuing overnight. Today's Monsoon Prediction Index sits at a 7 out of 10, meaning there is moderate risk storms could create flooding problems and damaging winds.

Widespread storms are on tap for the 4th of July as the trough moves across the area. Between now and Wednesday evening, many places across southern Arizona will see at least an inch of rain. Some spots could see 2"+ rainfall totals, including Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties. The Monsoon Prediction Index for the 4th of July sits at a 9 out of 10, with a high risk for flash flooding.

Not all is lost on the 4th, as storms taper off by Wednesday evening. Area fireworks shows look like a "go" for tomorrow night.

Storm chances decrease somewhat the remainder of the week & weekend. Isolated storms are on tap starting Thursday with high pressure sitting east of the state.
