Posted 8:42 AM 8/20/2012 : Hit & miss storms for Tucson's 237th birthday

TUCSON - Kicking off the work week with fewer storms than Sunday.

High pressure near Yuma will drive in isolated storms from the north today, according to News 4 Meteorologist Jeff Beamish. Isolated storms develop around 12 PM and taper off after 8 PM this evening. Because of the low severe weather threat, today's Monsoon Prediction Index sits at 3 out of 10.

Expect daytime highs in the mid to upper 90's across the Old Pueblo this afternoon.

High pressure moves east of the state the next few days, which will draw in more Monsoon moisture. This should lead to a better chance of scattered thunderstorms Tuesday through Thursday with highs in the mid 90's. A few storms by mid-week could be severe.

A westerly flow aloft sets up over Arizona heading into the weekend, scouring out Monsoon moisture. Starting Saturday, storm chances reside in the higher terrain with valley floors staying dry.
