TUCSON - A coin-flip forecast for Monsoon storms today.

If morning cloud cover breaks up, scattered thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, according to News 4 Meteorologist Jeff Beamish. However, if cloud cover lingers through the daytime hours, storms will be the isolated variety.

The best chance of storms today appears to be west of an Oracle-Sierra Vista line. If sunshine breaks out, highs reach the upper 90's this afternoon in Tucson.

Today's Monsoon Prediction Index sits at a 5, as some storms will be capable of gusty winds over 40 MPH.

Over the weekend, high pressure over the Rockies keeps a southeasterly flow over southern Arizona. This holds enough moisture in place for scattered thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. Like today, weekend storm chances will hinge on how much cloud cover we start with each day.

Isolated to scattered storms greet you for the new work week, as an inverted trough approaches from the east. An uptick in storms could be possible the middle of next week if moisture from Tropical Storm Fabio makes it into the state.
