TUCSON - The Cimmaron unit at the Arizona State Prison on Wilmot is on lockdown after an inmate tried to escape this morning in a delivery truck.
Prison officials confirmed to News 4 Tucson's Lupita Murillo that the attempted escapee, Jimmy Odom, is an inmate out of Coconino County. At about 8:40 a.m., he assaulted a contract employee, stole a delivery truck, then drove the vehicle through the unit's interior fence, and was stopped by the perimeter fence.
A correctional officer immediately restrained Odom. There is an additional complex-wide perimeter fence outside the Cimarron perimeter that is patrolled by armed officers.
Inmate Odom was sentenced out of Coconino County and is serving a life sentence for First-Degree Murder, Burglary, Armed Robbery and Kidnapping convictions, prison officials confirmed.
The Unit remains in lockdown and the incident is under investigation by the Arizona Department of Corrections.
