Posted 9:35 PM 3/8/2013 : I-10 closes from Vail to Benson
TUCSON - Drivers were being diverted on a 67-mile detour southeast of Tucson Friday night.
Interstate 10 was closed from Highway 83 near Vail to Highway 90 in Benson. It was scheduled to last from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m.
Arizona Department of Transportation crews had to demolish a railroad bridge near Marsh Station Road. It had been a nuisance for the trucking industry for years, with a clearance of only 15 feet.
The traffic was sent through Sonoita and Whetstone.
The Sonoita Mercantile, 25 miles south of the freeway, is the town's only gas station. They usually close at 7 p.m. but stayed open 24 hours.
Mayra Lopez was scheduled to work until 11:30 p.m.
"It's something different," she said, "something new to see different faces, kind of see more action than we usually do in this town."
Andres Alcaraz took the detour when he went from Tucson to Sierra Vista. He got gas at the Sonoita Mercantile.
"It was nice," he said. "I've never even been through here. I was kind of scared at first, hoping I wouldn't run out of gas, but I finally found a little town right here."
That was at 7 p.m., 2 hours before the closure. He blamed his brother.
"I'm getting more information," he said. "I wish I would have just took the freeway. I would have been back home already."
