Posted 5:40 PM 9/2/2012 : Hunting training as dove hunting season begins
TUCSON - It's a tradition for some families, heading outdoors to go camping or hiking for Labor Day weekend, but for others, the holiday marks the beginning of hunting season.
Some local kids are learning how to do it safely, including how to handle guns.
Dove season just started this weekend, and what better way to gear up for it than with a hunting education program.
This program is designed to not only teach you gun safety, but also how to respect wildlife and also property.
After a lesson indoors, these boys marched off to the desert terrain.
During the hike, they encountered different hunting scenarios: spotting animals in the brush, trails of blood, learning how to track down their prey while almost getting bit by the slithering kind.
"I think that it would most likely happen in the field, so it was helpful," said eleven-year-old Aydn Acuna.
Acuna has been hunting since he was seven.
He's following in his father's footsteps.
His dad went through this program in 1985.
"It shows you the safety skills and everything you would need to hunt," said Acuna.
Dave Daughtry, with Pima County Public Ranges said kids that go through a program like this are less likely to be reckless around guns than their counterparts.
"When you demystify firearms or you teach youth how to use them safely, they will really respond to that instruction and that self discipline," said Daughtry.
Sixteen-year-old David Mills agrees.
"You just have to be knowledgeable about what you do, and don't make a mistake because it will end up getting you killed," said Mills.
The Southeast Regional Park Shooting Range hosts this program the last Sunday of each month.
