Posted 10:32 PM 5/10/2012 : House made of shipping containers draws criticism
TUCSON - An architect is building a new home out of old shipping containers near Prince Road and Mountain Avenue.
Some people in the neighborhood think it is ugly and will bring down property values.
"It was a real shock to see this," Bill Gaddis said. "It just looks out of place. It doesn't belong in a residential area."
The house is made of 4 containers that were sitting in a port in Houston. There is a surplus of containers around the country, according to the architect Jason Anderson.
"You always have critics when you're doing something new," Anderson said. "I think it's going to have a nice, clean, contemporary look. It's going to blend in."
The 2-story, 1,200 square-foot house is durable, energy-efficient and affordable, according to Anderson.
The house will not look like shipping containers when it is finished. Anderson will cover it with a "skin."
Some residents in the area like the new house.
"Times change," Kevin Burke said. "Building styles change. Anytime that you have investment in the neighborhood it's going to be good for all of the property owners."
The house has been approved by the city and state, according to Anderson.
Anderson plans on leasing the house to renters in about 2 weeks.
