Posted 5:10 AM 11/25/2011 : Hittin' the Trails 4 You: Tumamoc Hill
TUCSON - Ask anyone making the trek up Tumamoc Hill. Do it once and you're hooked.
Perhaps it has to do with it's proximity, which is a stone's throw from downtown. Maybe it's because you're climbing over 700 feet in a 1.5 mile span. Whatever the reason, the common denominator: it's a challenge.
Hiker Joe Ornelas said, "Your muscles really get tight and so forth. You gotta be in good shape".
Tumamoc Hill seems a little unorthodox, as the trail is asphalt instead of dirt. However, a lot of the features you find out in the wilderness, you'll find on Tumamoc.
Wildlife ranges from Gambel's quail to rabbits. Desert flora is abundant, with barrel and saguaro cacti flanking the path. It's also a fantastic place to take in a sunrise of sunset.
If you've never hiked Tumamoc Hill, there are a few things to be aware of. First, during weekdays the path is closed between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM. This is because it's a research area for the University of Arizona. On weekends, you can hike at any time.
Finally, because it is a research area, dogs are not allowed on Tumamoc Hill.
