TUCSON - For Kari Elkins, this is more than just a weekend hike.

"One of my big focuses in life is to get healthy and to find something you want to do. Its not like I started walking 20 miles a day, I just started slowly and got more and more healthy & working out with my friends and trainer", said Elkins.

All of this work for the Pima Canyon Trail. There's good reason it's one of Tucson's best hikes.

The views of the Tucson valley: stunning. The cacti, ranging from prickly pears to crested saguaros. Hikers will also find several species of birds.

"Figure about a 3 to 3.5 hour hike if you want to get to what we call the first dam", said hiker Bill Kaufman.

With dramatic vistas, the Pima Canyon Trail seems daunting. It's actually quite manageable, despite the 1,000 foot elevation gain from trailhead to the first dam.

Strenuous, it is not. However, trekking poles can take some bark away from this moderate hike.

"There's a lot of level areas and it's very rocky. So you have to take your time particularly coming back down, you have to watch your footing", said Kaufman.

Upon learning about the 1,000 foot elevation gain, Elkins said, "That's like a big, tall building isn't it? Wow, go me!"

A sense of accomplishment, tucked away in the foothills of the Catalinas.
