TUCSON - The Brown Mountain Trailhead starts at the Juan Santa Cruz picnic area in the Tucson Mountains.

To get started on your hike, go to the southernmost point of the parking lot and walk past a cluster of picnic tables.

Finding the trailhead is one challenge, but finding the actual trail is another. Minutes after leaving the parking lot, look for a rock cairn on the left side of the trail. When you see it, hang a right & that will lead you up Brown Mountain.

The hike itself features a well-maintained trail. There are several switchbacks, surprisingly not too strenuous.

As is the case with any hike in the Tucson Mountains, you'll find a mix of cacti, ranging from the stoic to the stubby. Hiker Josie Crocker said, "I'm so surprised it's green. You can see the difference in the mountains up there against the cacti, the reds against the greens. It's beautiful".

Even some of the desert bushes are starting to pop a few Fall colors.

What makes this trail though is the views. Trekking along the ridgeline, you'll have a perfect perch to check out Kitt Peak, Wasson Peak and the Santa Rita Mountains.

Hiker Rick Chenot said, "What's really so neat is how it seems like the mountains change depending on how the sun's shining on them. Sometimes they look dark, sometimes the look almost white & chalky looking".

The Brown Mountain Trail is an out & back type, ending at the Gilbert Ray Campground. Plan for a 4 mile round trip hike, slightly less than moderate.
