TUCSON - Sabino Canyon's Esperero Trail has a couple starting points: one near the Cactus Picnic Area & another just off shuttle stop #1.

If you start at shuttle stop #1, you'll get dropped off at the Rattlesnake Trail, a mostly flat and easy hike. After a half-mile, you'll reach the Esperero Trail.

Hikers will quickly figure out that the Esperero Trail isn't messing around. Within the first few minutes, the uphill climb gains several hundred feet in elevation. It's quite the leg burner the rest of the way too.

"It's not as difficult as the Finger Rock Trail, but it reminds me of it from time to time", said hiker Dale Brethower. The Esperero Trail is worthy of that comparison, as it gains a whopping 4,000 feet in elevation.

While the trail is mostly rocky, there are some flat spots. This allows hikers to catch their breath and take in breathtaking views. From the city to the Catalina and Rincon Mountains, hikers get a front row seat to it all on the Esperero Trail.

Another draw: the wildlife. Plenty of white-tail deer call Sabino Canyon home. If you're lucky, you'll catch a family of them eating.

If you're planning to take on the Esperero Trail, come ready to invest an entire day. "It's about 8 hours out and back to get to Bridal Veil Falls", said Brethower.

For those starting at shuttle stop #1, remember the last time the shuttle swings by is 4:00 PM. The earlier you start this daunting hike, the better.
