Posted 5:10 AM 12/2/2011 : Hittin' the Trails 4 You: Madera Canyon's Super Trail
MADERA CANYON - The Super Trail has a little bit of everything for hikers.
Several times, the trail crosses a stream bed, with water flowing almost year round. There also still may be a smattering of Fall foliage, but not as widespread as it was a few weeks ago.
The Madera Canyon birds add to the serenity. To help you spot them is a list of all species seen in the area, which you can pick up at the trailhead for free.
Not only is the Super Trail home to water and wildlife, it's also home to tragedy. Three boy scouts lost their lives on the trail in a 1958 freak snowstorm. There are two memorials to honor them: one at the trailhead & another 4 miles up near Josephine Saddle.
Experienced hikers will get a challenge, thanks to a daunting 16 mile round trip leg burner. Plan for a 4,000 foot climb up Mt. Wrightson if you're doing the whole hike. It is a gradual climb, making the use of trekking poles optional.
