TUCSON - You don't need a fancy GPS device to help you go "Hittin' the Trails". If you have a cell phone, there are some free apps for that! Here's a few of the best hiking apps for iPhone and Android.

AlpineQuest for Android is an app that features details topographic maps, which you can load up whether you have service or not. It also has a nice compass feature, made functional by activating the GPS option on your device.

This app isn't the most user-friendly, so spend some time playing around with it before taking it on a hike.

Google has an incredibly easy-to-use app for Android called My Tracks. It uses GPS to plot out the path you're taking. All you do it record track, start hiking and when you're done, stop recording. You can then save your created path to your phone or send it to friends.

Not only does My Tracks trace your steps, it gives you elevation gain, distance hiked and how long it takes you start to finish.

iPhone users, fear not. There's a similar app to this called Trimble Outdoors Navigator. It does the same things as My Tracks: tracing your path and giving out a head-spinning amount of stats. All of this can be backed up by creating a free account.

Finally, iPhone boasts an app called iMapMyHike. Keep track of where you're been, share your hike with other users, and if you're dieting, keep inventory of what you're eating.
