TUCSON - Call Summit Hut's Craig Little the "Shoe Guru". When it comes to feet, Craig's got a few things for you to keep in mind when buying new hiking shoes.

First, not all shoes are created equal.

Those who only hike a few miles are best served using a simple shoe. "A lot of people prefect a mid-cut if they're concerned about ankle stability or just protecting their ankles from getting roughed up by rocks and things", said Little.

For experienced hikers, look no further than the Five Fingers or hiking boots.

Second, whatever shoe you choose, make sure it fits. Little said, "The person's foot really determines what shoe is best for them".

Summit Hut is one of many stores with a thorough process of finding the perfect pair. After measuring your feet in several ways, they'll suggest a pair, then have you test them out on a rocky surface and an incline.

Whether you buy new shoes or not, new socks can do wonders. Whether they're wool or synthetic, you've got options. Little said, "We have low cut, high cut, thick cushion, thin cushion. We have socks with individual toes in them".

Finally, if you got low arches, insoles can give you a needed lift. "Give them a try if you're having problems. Especially if you've had problems with plantar fasciitis, you may want to give them a try", said Little.
