Posted 6:22 AM 1/25/2013 : Hittin' the Trails 4 You: Blackett's Ridge
TUCSON - The hike to Blackett's Ridge in Sabino Canyon doesn't mess around. From its start at the Phoneline Trail, you're going uphill.
A little over a half mile on the Phoneline leads you to the Blackett's ridge Trail, a 1.7 mile stretch not for the faint of heart.
"I would say moderate to borderline strenuous", said hiker Leon Glasshoffer, "You have to be in pretty decent shape to get up there".
If you're looking for a leg-burning hike, this trail is for you. From the base to the top of Blackett's Ridge, it's a 1,500 foot elevation gain.
"It's steep. You feel like you're there because you make a summit, then there's another one and another one", said hiker Marisol Urreiztieta.
Glasshoffer added, "It happens about 7 times where you think you're at the peak, then finally you do get to the peak".
Two hours of switchbacking and climbing later, you'll reach that peak, which features a sweeping 360 degree view of the valley floors and mountains.
"It's wonderful because you have a sense of accomplishment because you see the end of the trail and the plaque that says end of the trail", said Urreiztieta.
To get to Blackett's Ridge, you can take the Bear Canyon shuttle to stop number 2, then cross the bridge to the Phoneline Trail. You can also use the Bear Canyon Trailhead to get to Phoneline, which adds another 0.8 miles to your hike.
