DOUGLAS, Ariz. - A head-on collision killed 4 people north of Douglas Thursday morning.
A van with 7 people was driving north on Highway 191. One person driving southbound in a truck crossed the center line, according to DPS.
Both drivers died along with 2 passengers from the van.
The 4 survivors were airlifted to Tucson.
It happened around 4:30 a.m., about 45 minutes before sunrise. The posted speed limit is 65 miles per hour.
"They're going to be severe," Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer Raul Molina said. "It's highway speed, and when 2 vehicles collide head-on, it's going to be a combined speed of what the vehicle one direction is going and the second vehicle coming at the opposite direction."
Even the tow truck driver for Budget Towing was surprised by the scene.
"I couldn't believe what I was seeing," Richard Munoz said. "It was just a horrible accident. I've been doing this for the past 19, 20 years, and this is one of the worst accidents I've seen in my life. And it was just a very tragic accident."
The van was full of migrant workers, according to Molina. That does not mean any of them were in the country illegally.
The fatalities include the truck driver, Dena Casella, 49. Elizebeth Cajigas, 56, drove the van. The passengers who died were Benito Gastelo, 53, and Ramona Medrano, 54.
