TUCSON - A Tucson City Council member is facing serious allegations of sexual harassment.
The alleged misconduct centers around Paul Cunningham who was elected two year ago.
Tucson's Mayor and City Attorney are taking the matter very seriously because the women Cunningham is accused of verbally harassing sexually also work for the City of Tucson.
The alleged incident happened during a recent out-of-town business trip when Cunningham was representing Tucson at a national conference in San Diego. Witnesses allege that Cunningham was drinking and began harassing high-profile women in attendance.
Sources tell News 4, that after the three day conference was over Cunningham called several people, and left voicemails apologizing for his behavior.
I talked with Cunningham by phone Monday, he called the allegations bologna and unsubstantiated. He declined our request for an on-camera interview.
So far, a formal complaint has not been filed. But Tucson's mayor Jonathan Rothschild tells News 4 he is concerned. In a statement Rothschild says, "Paul Cunningham's conduct in San Diego was such that it was referred to the City Attorney's office because it involved city employees."
I also spoke with council member Karin Ulrich. In light of the allegations she wants council members to have a refresher on 'standards of conduct'.
She plans to have a conversation with the City Attorney today, to request the meeting happen soon, and in executive session.
With new information from our sources, I reached out to Cunningham Tuesday afternoon for comment. So far, our call has not been returned.
