TUCSON - About 300 volunteers honored and remembered those killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks 11 years ago by helping build homes for Tucson families.
Habitat for Humanity sponsored the community project, which has become a tradition every Sept. 11th.
Everyone, including futuer homeowners, sported hard hats, raising the frame for four homes in the southeast side of Tucson.
"Volunteers have built the walls and they're raising them and that's going to be the foundation to build for the rest of the year," said Amanda Thomas, a spokeswoman for Habitat for Humanity.
However, for many volunteers who picked up a hammer to lend a hand, the significance of the day is what really mattered.
"The day is significant in so many ways and it's our way of commemorating all those people who sacrificed on 9-11," Thomas told News 4 Tucson.
Many volunteers were inspired by taking part in a national day of service, recognizing the victims of the terrorist attacks.
"I think it makes and takes a negative thing that happened in the past that we all remember and makes it positive," said Sarah Marcum who is a future homeowner and volunteered today as well.
Marcum says seeing the community come together and work on the homebuilding project sends a positive message.
"Instead of tearing something down like they did that many years ago," Marcum said, "now we're building something for the new futures."
