Posted 2:01 PM 9/28/2012 : Green Valley could get it's first hospital by early 2014
Tens of thousands of people living south of Tucson could soon have easier access to emergency medical care. TMC Healthcare just announced it is exploring development options for a new, 32-bed hospital in Green Valley. Right now the closest hospital is in Tucson, at least 30 minutes away. TMC hopes to put the facility just east of Canoa Ranch Rd. and I-19.
"My wife had gone through pancreatic cancer," said John Felsch, who works as a sales representative with Coldwell Banker in Green Valley. "It impacted us greatly, we've made a lot of trips to Tucson, my car almost knew the way by itself."
Other people have similar stories throughout Green Valley and the surrounding areas. Many patients are taken by ambulance, some even airlifted to hospitals during emergencies. Residents tell News 4 Tucson putting a facility close by would do more than provide much-needed inpatient and outpatient care. It would also boost the local economy by attracting people who may be hesitant to live in the area now.
"Green Valley is listed as the number one premiere retirement community, but there are some things that they ask for and that is one of them, is a hospital," said Jim DiGiacomo, executive director for the Chamber of Commerce.
"When the client found out there wasn't medical facilities such as hospitals here, they opted to live in Tucson rather than here," said Felsch.
There are still several steps left before the project becomes a reality but if all goes according to plan, the new hospital would open in early 2014.
