Posted 7:09 AM 3/13/2013 : Golden Goose celebrates 10 years of giving back to the community
CATALINA, Ariz.- It started out as a little-known shop in Catalina. But 10 years later "The Golden Goose Thrift Shop" is truly laying golden eggs.
Over the last decade it has given back about $5 million to community organizations. "It's pretty magical," says Store Manager Stephanie Urdiales.
At the start of each morning huge crowds dash through the shop doors. They find everything from donated books and magazines, to greeting cards and couches. Some say it's like the "Neiman Marcus of thrift stores". "We sell everything under the sun, including the kitchen sink," Urdiales jokes.
"It's like a little treasure-hunt," says Customer Patricia Nagasawa. "You never know what you're going to find."
About three years ago the shop moved to its current 13,000 square foot facility at 15970 N. Oracle Road. It's a well oiled machine, run by 40 to 60 volunteers a day, serving about 200 customers a day. "You meet so many nice people and you work with so many nice people. It's wonderful," says Volunteer Judi Huige.
But perhaps the best part of the operation is nearly all of the profit from each purchase goes back to the community. "We probably wouldn't be here without 'The Goose'," says Barbara McClure, Executive Director of Catalina Community Services.
CCS is one of the shop's main recipients. It provides food, clothing and counseling for community members in need. "If we didn't have 'The Goose' it would be hard," McClure says. "We'd be like a lot of other non-profits in this economic era, who are having a hard time covering the bottom line."
One of the other main recipients is Saddlebrooke Community Outreach. It helps provide college scholarships to local students. "It's very helpful for kids in this area," says Stephen Groth of Saddlebrooke Community Outreach. "The cost of college has gone up so high that every dollar we can provide helps them out."
It's a cycle of giving that never goes out of style.
The Golden Goose Thrift Shop is open Tuesday thru Friday from 10am until 2pm. It's also open Saturdays from 9am until 2pm.
If you would like to drop off a donation, you can head to the shop Monday thru Saturday from 8am until 3pm.
