TUCSON - Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made her first public appearance since moving back to Tucson at the MASH Bash, a fundraiser to benefit the trauma center at the University of Arizona Medical Center.

Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly made a quiet entrance to the event along with about 450 others who showed up to support the hospital.

It's the second event of it's kind, dubbed the MASH Bash because a number of surgeons from the hospital have had experiences serving in the military.

The organizers of the event say mimicking the theme of the hit television series was a more creative way to fundraise than a traditional black tie event.

Folks donned their MASH gear in a hanger with several old airplanes on display at the Pima Air and Space Museum. The night featured drinks, food, speeches and music from a USO-style band.

"For us to be here in Tucson, a metropolitan city like this that's fun and exciting, but to have the community actually recognize us and want to come out here and help is just an absolute undesribable feeling for us," said Peter Rhee, the Trauma Chief at the UAMC.

Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly were in attendance. It was the UAMC trauma center that operated on Giffords after she was gunned down in the January 8th shootings.

Tickets to get into the MASH Bash ran at $250 a pop. All the proceeds from the event will go toward the new burn program at the hospital.
