TUCSON - Nearly 30 law enforcement agencies from throughout the state of Arizona participated in a terrorism drill in Rio Rico Wednesday.
The drill was designed to bring first responders together in the event of an emergency. The scenario began at the Dennis DeConcini port of entry in Nogales when a group of heavily armed cartel members made their way north of the border and en route to land near Interstate 19 in Rio Rico. One of the buildings in Rio Rico was believed to be a meth lab.
First responders from as far away as Tucson and Phoenix participated in the activity. Louis Trammel, the director of emergency management for the State of Arizona said, "it's an opportunity that most don't have and that's an international partner south of the border, that is more than willing to respond to fire and hazard and chemical events."
A team of personnel from Nogales, Sonora were on hand at the drill to observe.
"When it comes to a catastrophe or a major incident, it's very good to know that we can count on our brother firefighters from Tucson," said Eduardo Canizalez, who represents the office of emergency management in Sonora.
Brad Olson, from the Tucson Fire Department said the scenario was an opportunity for all agencies to communicate and share resources.
"We make sure that we're ready," Olson said. "We get the equipment ready, it's very important that we have drills like this as real possible so that if something does happen we're ready to go."
