PHOENIX - The number of people who died in motor vehicle crashes on Arizona's roadways increased in 2011 for the first time in five years.

A report by the Arizona Department of Transportation says 825 people died in motor vehicle crashes in Arizona last year.

That's an 8 percent increase from 759 fatalities in 2010.

Fatal motorcycle fatalities rose sharply during 2011.

One hundred and thirty-two motorcycle riders and passengers were killed during 2011, compared with 85 such deaths in 2010.

The highest number of traffic fatalities in Arizona came during 2006 when 1,301 people were killed.
