Annual National "Dump the Pump" Day
Tired of high gas prices? Residents are invited to "Dump the Pump" and ride public transit Thursday, June 21 as the nation participates in the 7th Annual National Dump the Pump Day.
This national program sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) started in 2006 when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon to encourage people to ride public transportation, instead of driving their cars, to save money. The slogan for this year is "Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit."
"Using transit saves riders money, but it also has other health and environmental benefits that reduces public health impacts and costs," said Ryan Kooi, interim Supervisor for Vista Transit. "By walking or riding your bikes to commute to and from the bus shelter, you're staying active and exercising. Also reducing the amount of vehicles on the road reduces emission, helping to keep air pollutants down. For these reasons, we encourage our residents to try an alternate way to commute by riding our buses during "Dump the Pump" day."
Since gas prices reached nearly $4 a gallon this year, saving money is on everyone's minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices.
