(NBC NEWS) - Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has issued an executive order directing state agencies to deny driver's licenses to illegal immigrants taking part in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
The order came the same day young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally could apply for temporary legal status.
Demonstrators quickly took to the streets to protest Brewer's actions.
The Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program could expand the rights of more than one million young illegal immigrants by giving them work permits, social security numbers and access to driver's licenses.
They would not obtain legal residency status or a path to citizenship.
Brewer says her order was meant to cut through some confusion created by the president's program.
"They're here illegally and unlawfully, in the state of Arizona, and it has already been determined that you're not allowed to have a driver's license if you're here illegally. And so, with the Obama amnesty plan, that doesn't make them legally here, because they haven't even applied yet for whatever work permits that they're going to go for," Brewer said.
