Posted 4:13 PM 10/31/2012 : Downtown intersection to close for 7 days
TUCSON - The intersection of Congress Street and Stone Avenue will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday. Crews will be installing water lines underneath the intersection in preparation for the Tucson Modern Streetcar. The intersection will be closed 24 hours for seven consecutive days.
Amber Zeik works downtown and described the current construction as, "pretty much just a lot of wait times, a lot of traffic and a lot of detours." She also said, "everybody is running late."
Sunlink, as it's been named, will connect just west of the interstate with Downtown Tucson and the University of Arizona.
Sarah Walters also works downtown, and says "it's been a little big aggravating at times, but I know that having the Streetcar in will help people out in the long, so it's worth it."
According to a press release, "East and west pedestrian access across Stone Avenue will be maintained. North and south pedestrian access will only be maintained along the west side of Stone Avenue for safety reasons."
Alternate routes fot motorists travelling southbound on Stone Avenue, north of Congress Street, are:
Alameda Street, west to Church Avenue and south to Broadway. Pennington Street, east to Scott or Sixth Avenues and then south to Broadway. The advisory also states, "Parking along Stone Avenue, south of Congress Street will not be available."
