Posted 2:33 PM 6/5/2012 : Transit of Venus events in Tucson today
TUCSON - After today, it's a sight that won't be seen in southern Arizona skies until the year 2117.
At 3:09 PM this afternoon, the "Transit of Venus" will take place as Venus tracks across the face of the Sun. As a result, Venus will create a small dark spot over the Sun, making it look as if the Sun has a hole punctured in it. There are several viewing events going on in Tucson today, according to the University of Arizona. To view a complete list of viewing parties, click here.
UA's Mount Lemmon Sky Center will also be live streaming the "Transit of Venus" online starting at 2 PM. Click here to check out the live stream.
NASA is also streaming the Transit live, with expert commentary - click here to view that livestream.
Much like the solar eclipse of a few week ago, do not look directly at the Sun when viewing. Make sure to have a solar viewer or solar goggles, which can be purchased at either the UA Flandrau Science Center or Starizona at 5757 North Oracle Road.
