TUCSON - The Tucson man who pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a 2008 shooting spree that left one TPD officer dead was sentenced to over 91 years in a state mental facility, in addition to at least 25 years in prison.
Delich pleaded "guilty except insane" to nine Aggravated Assault charges back in February. He pleaded guilty to the First Degree Murder of Tucson Police Officer Eric Hite, and guilty to another Aggravated Assault Charge for wounding a Pima County Sheriff's deputy.
According to court documents, Delich will serve a concurrent 91.5 years in a state mental health facility, unless doctors find that he is not severely mentally ill. He was also charged with two concurrent sentences of 25 years and 10.5 years in prison for the First Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault charges.
Several doctors have diagnosed Delich with paranoid schizophrenia.
Nohemy Hite, Eric Hite's widow, told News 4 Tucson in February that she was glad she will not have to spend more time in a court room.
"I'm not going to go through trial," Nohemy Hite said, "and reliving everything and hearing things that, at this point, by choice, I have not heard."
Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor is glad there was no insanity attached to the guilty plea for his officer's murder.
"I believe it was very important for him to accept the plea of just straight up guilty for the murder of officer Hite," Villasenor said.
The lawyers also believe the compromise was appropriate.
"It's been resolved in a manner consistent with the best interests of the victims," prosecutor Kellie Johnson said, "and justice was served."
"Everybody prevails in this kind of case," Delich's attorneyStanton Bloom said. "No one should take solace that they won this case or they lost this case."
